PSF fitting errors/warnings in Prompt Processing

Description

On the April 22 observing run, Prompt Processing observed 127/7371 runs failing with either PsfexNoGoodStarsError, PsfexTooFewGoodStarsError, or NoPsfStarsToStarsMatchError. A full list is attached as Loading file.... I tried examining a few images in RubinTV and they didn’t look obviously unprocessable. As far as anyone knows, the actual sky conditions were quite good.

4618 other runs emitted Could not get stamp image for psfCandidate warnings; I assume this is related. A full list is attached as Loading file....

The edit to the source processing logic in psfexPsfDeterminer.py looks reasonable to me. Assuming Jenkins doesn’t complain, I think this is good to go

As I am more familiar with Piff and as there is nothing that looks obviously wrong (stars looks donuts, but I don’t think it should matters that much), I did the same run with Piff to see if it fails, and it does not fail and it runs just fine. Need to investigate to see what is going on, on PSFex side.

But as a quick fix I can use a faster version of Piff compared to the DRP pipeline (limit kernel size, avoid outlier rejections, don’t fit center, use C++ solver), it should go fast if this is a worry.

But still need to understand what is going on PSFex side, it says there is not enough stars, but there are 240 in the given example. Need to deep dive more.

I am able to reproduce the error, start to search why this is happening.

Thanks, will spend some time tomorrow to understand what is going on.
